New York City Outdoor Restaurants in Midtown

June 29, 2009 · Filed Under Restaurant Reviews · Comment

As the warm weather approaches, you’ll want to be able to sit outside when dining out. New York City has a great selection of restaurants with outdoor seating. When in the Midtown area, there are plenty of options for dining outside in the sunny weather.

Here are my picks for restaurants in New York City’s Midtown with outdoor seating: Midtown East (East of Fifth Avenue)

* El Rio Grande is a moderately priced restaurant that is actually two restaurants in one location. This Tex-Mex and Mexican dual restaurant features nicely priced margaritas as well as an extensive menu of quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos and more. If you are a fan of spicy chicken wings, this is the place to go. They are super spicy here.
* Naples45 is conveniently located near Grand Central Station in the Met Life building. It is an Italian eatery with thin crust pizza, Neapolitan style. In addition to a large variety of pizzas, they feature appetizers to share as well as Italian pasta favorites. It is a somewhat pricey establishment.

Green Tea Benefits – A guide to the health benefits of Green Tea

June 28, 2009 · Filed Under Tea · Comment

Green tea has enjoyed considerable attention in western countries lately due to its claimed health properties. This attention doesn’t come as a surprise to people living in Asian countries like China and Japan who have been enjoying the benefits of green tea for more than 4000 years.

However many companies have recognised the interest in green tea health benefits and created a range of green tea related supplements. Sometimes these companies make unproven claims about the health benefits of their products.

How is green tea better than other types of tea?

There are 3 main types of tea:

* Black Tea – made by exposing the tea leaves to air, heat, crushing and light
* Green Tea – Leaves are steamed or heated quickly to stop them oxidizing
* Oolong Tea – This is in-between, is not processed for as long as black tea but more than green tea

Because Green Tea hasn’t oxidized as much as other teas and it’s subjected to less fermentation and processing it usually contains higher levels of antioxidants and other health giving properties. However there are different grades of green tea and the levels of antioxidants present in the finished product depend on how, where and when it was picked.

Soup Without Meat: Broccoli Cauliflower Soup

June 27, 2009 · Filed Under Soups · Comment

As a soup lover, I always feel one can’t have too many soup recipes. I am not a big meat eater–just simply don’t like the taste of most meats–so I love a good soup that isn’t meat based. Assuming there are others out there like me, I am choosing to share a good soup recipe that is begetable based and doesn’t involve meat. This recipe for Broccoli-Cauliflower Soup produces a delicious rich, creamy soup. With the broccoli, cauliflower, onion and chicken-flavored bouillon, you can eat and enjoy this soup without getting a mouthful of meat. I like it with a rustic crusty bread. However, if you still want meat, it is perfect to serve with a sandwich on the side. This soup also makes a great appetizer course. This soup is also okay for diabetics as it has half as many proteins as carbs.

BROCCOLI-CAULIFLOWER SOUP

1 1/2 cups water

1 pkg (10-oz) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed

1 pkg (10-oz) frozen cauliflower, thawed

1/3 cup chopped onion

2 tsp chicken-flavored bouillon granules

1/4 tsp garlic powder

How About Some Southern Fried Chicken?

June 26, 2009 · Filed Under Restaurant Reviews · Comment

Not really, as Southern Fried Chicken, as a brand is picking up fast popularity all across the country. I have seen their menus, and it must be said that they are lip-smacking items up on their menu list. Who wouldn’t want to give them a try? Even the die-hard KFC guys are seen moving into SFC (Southern Fried Chicken), to see what these guys offer.

So, what eventually do they offer?

For starters, items from the Southern Fried Chicken are a bit mellowed down in terms of the intake of calories and fats. Agreed they are fried in oil too, but some dishes are relatively natural and can thus be even consumed by people who are on a diet program.

Bacon baguette, for example, is a crunchy and a snappy breakfast item, which packages in about 800 calories, plenty of proteins and carbohydrates and only about 22 grams of fats. The Sausage and Mustard Baguette is another baguette dish that is low fat!

Which Spices Are Healthy?

June 26, 2009 · Filed Under Food & Drinks · Comment

I get asked that quite often, which is always interesting to me. Interesting because I’ve not really heard of specifically unhealthy spices. Nobody ever told me to avoid something because it had that fattening parsley or anything like that. But there are healthy spices – at least healthier than the others.

Let’s start with Ginger. While it’s not the same, I remember sipping Ginger Ale when I was sick as a kid. I wonder if that was because my mom knew that ginger was great for settling stomachs. It’s fabulous for that and is one of the reasons ginger comes with your sushi. But ginger is also great at fighting inflammation and increasing the fat burning by raising your metabolism. Plus it’s tasty.

Cinnamon – who knew that was healthy? Like ginger cinnamon is good for settling the stomach. But it also is an antifungal agent. Did you know that cinnamon sticks are really dried pieces of tree bark? I bet a cinnamon tree smells good when it rains. Unfortunately cinnamon is usually paired with sugar where it’s not so helpful. But by itself at only 6 calories per teaspoon, cinnamon is a great addition to toast, chili or applesauce.

Serving salsa has been so popular to serve in gatherings due to the fact that it’s easy to prepare and at the same time, it’s easy to eat and enjoy while talking to your friends, relatives and to others who are in the party.

Though salsa has been constantly served with chips and oftentimes, it’s classified as a dip. But do you know that salsa can be included as a side dish to many different dishes? Have you ever thought of what other food go well with salsa to spice up your parties even more?

Salsa can be likened to wine as different types of salsa can go well with different types of food. For instance, a tropical mango-based salsa goes well with fish while avocado-based salsa is great when served with pork. Salsa, when served with the right food, can help parties to get even better.

Here are a couple of salsa recipes that you can use as well as ideas of what food to serve them best with.
